SHUTTER ISLAND (TRAILER) - ANALYSE

How is meaning created in this clip through the use of the micro-elements?

Cinematography

Uses of birds eyes view can give the audience a look around the surrounding around the character or let the audience see something that the character couldn't see in order to create tension. Long shot is also used as it tells the audience the location, which in this case it shows how isolated the area is and that it's completed separated from the outside world. Which gives a meaning of external help would be hard to reach or that it would be hard to escape. Both types of shot are used as establishing shot.

Close up are mostly used to capture the facial expression of the characters. In order for the character to convey feelings across to the audience. Such as fear, anger that helps with the tension of the clip.

Mise en scene

There is fog in the opening of the scene, which gives a sense of mystery and sets the tone. The location is set in a hospital, however, there is wire and the place is surrounded by high walls which suggest the idea of prison. There are lots of police force and the main character despite he's higher up in the hierarchy he's forced to give up his weapons. This creates tension as the character no longer have any weapon to protect himself also he will be closely monitored by the polices.

Furthermore, props such as matches are used as a light source, explosion, fire burning things to ash are used. However, the clip then includes lots of raining scene which contact each other, as water can put out the fire.

Antagonist are chained which gives a meaning of  they're capture and have scars on their face, which shows they aren't nicely treated as a normal patient that audience would expect to see in a normal hospital.

Lastly, in the clip it includes text. Such as "RUN" this tells the audience that if the character keeps doing what he's doing he might be in danger as the world "run" is taken as a warning. Yet, "stop me before I kill more" is shown on the wall of the prisoners written in blood. This created fear of something bad might happened and the tension of danger towards the audience.

Editing
Having quick scene change, which makes it hard for audience to focus and to have enough time to figure out what is happening. Also it includes lots of fading in and out effects in the transition of the scenes.
