GLITCH EFFECT - FIRST ATTEMP

After finding the different fonts, I decided to try and the glitch effect  on to it. In order to do this, I search on glitch effect tutorial on youtube and try to learn it as i go.

The video that I looked at is the following video. The whole video is 15mins but it took me awhile to follow as I was just introduced to using After effect.

OUT COME...

STEPS....

The video uses his logo but I decided to use the phrase " Hello Charlie" as it relates to what I'll be doing (imaginary friend). All the resources used in the making is all link in the description of the video.
After creating the composition settings, the first step is to import the glitch video and then create the layer Hello Charlie.

You then create an "Adjustment layer" and then add the effect "Displacement map" and select the glitch video which will effect the actual video.
Next step to create the moving action, you replicate the glitch effect and spread it throughout then change the max horizontal displacement value and the max vertical displacement value. Make sure to make it random.

After createing a new layer call newell object name it "Split" then apply the effect slider control and then lock the layer.

Now we need to work out the show of the three different colours, RED, GREEN AND BLUE. In order to do this, you replicate the font layer 3times. To change the colour you apply the effect levels(individual colour control) to all three layers, then don't make changes to the colour your want and turn the colour output white from 255 to 0 for the other two colours. Also, change the mode of red and blue to screen.

Then open position for the red layer and clip the stop watch while holding the "alt option" on the keyboard. Which will open up the expression position then type in wiggle(10, and then drag the spiral looking icon to the split layer and close it with another parenthesis.

Then change the value on the slider effect, this will create the split of the RGB colours.

Now we have to create keyframes. Create a keyframe just one keyframe before the glitch effect ( value 0 ) follow by another keyframe in line with the glitch ( value 20). Do this to the start and end to all effects. This is to create the shifting of the RGB colours. To smooth down the effect right click and go to key frame assistance and change to easy ease.

Then create a new adjustment layer (name it TV effect) and apply the effect bad TV 3 -weak. Then open up the pen tool create a selection of the mask. Again create small section then replicate and spread it out (keep random).

ADD AUDIO TRACK AND FINISH.

RELATED FILMS

I watch this film to get more understanding of the film. I really like the idea of playing "hide and seek" and the use of breaking the 4th wall to create the idea of having someone there. Also the idea of a child being innocent so things aren't taken seriously but the background sound that goes with it creates a creepy mood.

CREDIT - FONTS

As we are focusing on imaginary friend, I did a search on children's hand writing.
To get an initial ideas on what font we might be using in our opening.

I then look up fonts on the website "Dafont" and found some similar fonts.

Sam Handwriting by Sam Horne

Sign handwriting by Fontscale.com

Mouse Handwriting by Sahara

Grunge Handwriting by JLH Fonts

Inspired from the opening credits from the film "Se7en", me and Nana really like the glitching effect used.

IMAGINARY FRIEND - IDEAS

HIDE AND SEEK (2005)

Drawings of children tend to be one of the convention use to represent imaginary friend in most of the movies.

After searching through the internet, children tend to create imaginary friend which can be human, animals or fantasy creatures.

Quoted from the internet "There are many case studies of children inventing imaginary friends to help them cope with traumatic experiences."

MOOD BOARD

Is.... an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc., intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.

This is a mood board I created relating to imaginary friend and old playground.

INTERNET SEARCHING - CHILDREN

Last night me and nana came up to discuss about the type of shot and the possible story line. I then did some search on abandonded children and playground.

Abandonded dolls came up, which i think it can be used to convey the idea of having imaginary friends. As when we're little, we tend to play with dolls and imagine that they can talk and play with us.

The use of doll can also be used to show "human like" figure inspired from the movie Babadook.

Personally, I'm really afraid of the doll as from its human like figure and having the idea of them having the ability to move by it self. As in movies, dolls can be haunted or possessed.

Also, I found this picture and find it really creepy. Thinking it from one perspective, it can convey the meaning of being consumed by the drawing. The neutral face on the drawing breaking the 4th wall can creates tension on the audience. This technique is also used in the opening of the movie Women in black.

Inspired from this, we can change from the drawing of mother to a friend to show the idea of the friend is imagined or made up by the character.

Further more, signs and writing such as " please don't leave me" or " stay and play" like this can be related. Which can gives a  sense of threatening and uncertainty of what is going to be consequences that might follow.

Moreover, I find this image disturbing as the use of props ( the mask of skeleton)as a part of mise en scene. Emphasis the meaning of death and the idea of devil, that contradict with the convention of child being innocent and pure.

BABADOOK (WHOLE MOVIE) - THOUGHTS

I've watched the whole film and analyse it, here are some things that I found interesting. Over all, I find the movie really depressing to watch, part of it is because of the plot but mostly I found that the sound involved (both diegetic and non-diegetic) in this film are really nice as it really creates a lot of tension and really keeps me on the edge of my seat. The change between intense tension and disturbing quietness made me felt really tired and made my energy is all drained out.

INTERESTING POINTS FROM CLIP

Through out the whole movie, this movies uses a lot of human like figure. That creates a sense of presentation of the fear.

The colour pallet used through out the film is very pale, that gave the sense of lifeless. There's barely any sunlight shining through the house, it is mostly kept dark which gives a feeling of overwhelming darkness coving the house, that there is no positive energy.

The mother seem to have two personality as sometime she seem to love and adore his son but sometime all she had toward her son is anger and hatred.

The cover of the book "Babadook" is in bright red which counter with the surrounding, the colour red also represent the sense of danger. The monster babadook was to represent the mother's emotion of grief due to the lost of her husband. We can make this connection between as the basement is where her husband stuff is and that in the ending the babadook went and hide in there.

The sound non diegetic sound are mostly echoing, repeating sound, magical sound and also the use of ratio sound waves. That builds up the tension. I think the use of theses music really creates strong tension as the sound is very irritating and isn't pleasant. It also contradict with the diegetic sound of footsteps on wood and the sound of fabric, which is usually represented as relaxing. Also the use of silent is really effective, as it puts audience on the edge of their seat.

Moreover, what increases the frustration is the screaming and crying of her over energetic son. That causes stressfulness while watching the film.

I really like this uses of mise en scene, as it convey the idea of she wanting her husband back and the use of devils and skeleton emphasis the idea of death of her husband.

The ending is very interesting, as the babadook didn't disappear which means that the feeling of lost of our lover won't ever fade or be forgotten but if we can control it then it won't affect our daily life.
